Bank on It!

November 26th, 2009 by Palmer Brown
Respond

Well, It’s on the Bank, technically…

The friendly Gentlemen of Sundance Square’s Engineering Department, which is the historical district of downtown Fort Worth, TX, contacted The Gilt Studio to repair the previously gilded wooden letters outside the Burk Burnett Building.

Originally built as the State National Bank in 1914, The Burk Building is still a functioning bank today, and it was up to me to bring its name sake back to shine.

Check out my pictures below cataloging my work, repairing the 19 splintered 12″ tall wood letters 50 feet in the air right through a visit by the first winter storm of the season. Needless to say it was a challenge, but always a pleasure!

Thank you John, Tommy, Dave, Mr. DeHart and everyone else!

Gilding Repair

Resin Cast Antlers… Wig Party 005.resized

The Junior League of Austin asked The Gilt Studio to donate our Gilding Repair Services for a broken shipment of Resin Cast Antlers to be used as decoration for this year’s annual fundraiser that is A Christmas Affair.

This year’s theme is “it’s a wild holiday”- an African Safari, lends itself to dress the Palmer Event Center with such fantastics as exotic animal prints and far out florals. All decorations are designed to not only set the mood for the holliday shoping spirit, but to also be re-sold to in helping raise proceeds to be donated back to the Austin Commuity.

These three foot resin cast antlers are to hang above the wine bar bringing an exotic elegance to the table.  After two shipments of broken Resin Cast Antlers later, the Junir League found it better to ask The Gilt Studio to repair the four less broken of the series, rather than waist more time and money shipping back and forth, only to see no improvement.

Copy “Craft”!

Instant Invite…Abby's Invitation.2 RESIZED

Within seconds  make your own decorative and intricate Homemade, not Handmade, Paper for invitations, note cards etc… using nothing other than what is already in your home: Found Objects and a Copier Machine.

I, along with three other bride’s maids, were in the honorable position to host our Bride’s first wedding shower. Unique in her own personality, our party theme was one-of-a-kind, in turn, as a This Couples “Favorite Things” shower. Rather than holding her guests hostage to registry for the traditional desirables of Crystal Clears and Lacy Linens, our Bride and Groom- to -Be preferred their friends shower them with what we each independently and personally found relative to their start: Hand carved salad bowl? Pillow made of retired linen napkins? Bottle of wine?

Needless to say, finding a pre-made invitation to suit was taking more time then just making our own…so I did, and easily at that! All it takes is a few found object relative to your “subject” and a copier machine.

First, I made my invitation. I then gathered construction paper and leftover fabric, assembled them in to place behind my invitation, and one trip to the neighborhood copy store later, I had 35 unique and “homemade” invitations, $0.35 each, ready to send out to set the unique, one- of- a- kind tone for our celebration to come!

If you want to make your own stationary etc, simply place a blank sheet of paper in front of your designs (instead of the invitation) where you would like to write in the future, and copy away!…

What I like about this concept, artistically, is that it creates an intriguing look of contrast from the three dimensional textures and shapes captured on a one dimensional  sheet of paper, as well as replicates the festivity of design detail from the objects being photo- copied!

I look forward to seeing what you all use to copy your own custom paper… Toy soldiers? Jewelery? Flowers?…

Enjoy!

Gilt Art Shoes

Gilt Fete*ish~Gilt Art Shoe. Fire Bird

As a donation to Ballet Austin’s Fete*ish Party and Silent Auction, The Gilt Studio is inviting one lucky individual to the Studio for a Champagne Snack and Design Consultation, to custom gild and decorate a pair of their shoes, brand new or to re-new the old, with 22Karat Gold and other precious materials, inspired by his or her own desires: another shoe, a piece of jewelry, a song?! We shall see!

To demonstrate the possibilities, we made two example shoes for the party inspired by two timeless ballets that were honored that evening at Fete*ish: Swan Lake and Fire Bird. Our Fire Bird shoe was inspired by a Russian Folk design of the bird, where we hand gilded and painted in detail directly on a two toned Black and Deep Royal Blue Paten Leather Pump. The Swan Lake high heel was a High Fashion Forward design on a Silver Leather shoe adorned with Gilt Quill Feathers, Twine, and Satin, Fresh Water Pearls and White Ostrich Feathers. Both shoes are sealed and designed to wear.

We look forward to meeting our lucky Fete*ish winner, and new friend, and look forward to keeping you posted on what fun design ensues!

Light as a Feather; Good as Gold!

Gilt Feather 005

In Egyptian mythology, Ma’at was the Goddess of Truth, Justice, and The Underworld,Before. Gilt Feather.resized and it was her job to evaluate and judge the souls of all those who had just died.  She weighed each soul against a feather; if the soul was too heavy it was sent to the underworld, but if the soul was as light as a feather it was allowed to proceed upwards to the heavens. Ma’at was often portrayed wearing an ostrich feather on her head, as a symbol of truth in Egypt.”

There was an unexpected loss in a family, and The Gilt Studio was asked to Gold Leaf a feather to be framed as a token of remembrance. A full gild with 22Karat Gold Leaf  on a tailored white quill feather proved most fitting for the personalities of this project.

Even more appropriately, Ancient Egypt was one culture in particular that cultivated the gilding arts. Applying our custom gilding to a personally symbolic item, a feather no less,  allows us to truly exercise our goal in bring this historical trade back to life in today’s modern world.

So Special~ Custom Gilded Antlers from his own personal collection.Ray Davis Custom Antlers. Before

After his father’s passing, Ray Davis gathered all of his father’s antlers that had been collected from hunting days gone by. Inspired by our Table Couture; Gilt Antler Collection, Ray sent The Gilt Studio a special pair of antlers in particular to have them Custom Gilded with 22K Genuine Gold Leaf. These are the antlers that he and his father used to rattle- up deer at their ranch when they would go hunting.Ray Davis Custom Antlers. after 2

Now hand gilded with genuine 22K Gold Leaf, Ray may not only uniquely and elegantly display the memories of his “Huntting Day’s with Dad”, but he has also created an heirloom, custom, for his family to enjoy for generations to come.Ray Davis Custom Antlers.after 12

Using techniques and materials as that of gilded historical monuments, Ray’s Custom Gilt Antlers are durable and weather proof. Ray could still also use his Custom Gilt Antlers to rattle-up deer, if he wanted to! How luxurious!

Thanks for letting us be such a  special a part of your story, Ray, and Enjoy!
